  • Salt
  • Black pepper

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 1 large onion
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Black pepper
  • Oil

For the In-N-Out Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup sweet relish
  • 2 Tbsp mustard
  • 1 Tsp white vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

1. Prepare the In-N-Out Sauce

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, combine 1/2 cup of mayonnaise, 1/3 cup of ketchup, 1/3 cup of sweet relish, 2 tablespoons of mustard, 1 teaspoon of white vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper.
  2. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until well combined.
  3. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the sauce until needed. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.

2. Prepare the Caramelized Onions

  1. Peel the large onion and cut it into 4 slices, each about 1/3 inch thick.
  2. Set the onion slices aside.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add some oil.
  4. Gently place the onion slices into the hot oil.
  5. Season the onions with a pinch of salt, black pepper, and a sprinkle of sugar. This helps to bring out the natural sweetness of the onions.
  6. Cook the onions for about 4 to 5 minutes, then flip them over using a spatula. Season the other side with a bit more salt, black pepper, and sugar.
  7. Continue to cook the onions until they are caramelized, but be careful not to burn them.
  8. Once the onions are done, gently remove them from the skillet and place them on a platter.
  9. Place a slice of cheddar cheese on 2 of the onion slices. Keep the other two slices without cheese.
  10. Cover the onions with foil to keep them warm.

3. Cook the Beef Patties

  1. Add more oil to the skillet if needed and increase the heat to high.
  2. Place the frozen beef patties onto the hot skillet.
  3. Season the patties with salt and black pepper.
  4. Cook the patties for about 4 to 5 minutes on one side, then flip them over and season the other side with more salt and black pepper.
  5. Continue to cook the patties until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (well-done).
  6. Place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and let it melt before removing the patties from the skillet.

4. Assemble the Flying Dutchman

  1. Take one of the caramelized onion slices with cheese and place it on a serving plate.
  2. Place two cooked beef patties on top of the onion slice.
  3. Top the patties with one of the caramelized onion slices that do not have cheese.
  4. Repeat the assembly for the second Flying Dutchman.

5. Serve and Enjoy!

  1. Serve the Flying Dutchman burgers immediately with the homemade In-N-Out sauce on the side.
  2. Enjoy this delicious and savory burger creation with family and friends!
